Wounds That Words Leave: How Harassment Damages the Mind

Harassment is not just a “joke”, “notes in passing”; this is emotional violence that leaves invisible scars. Harassment leaves its mark either when a person is at a primary or secondary level, whether they are at school, at work, or on the Internet, or in general society. When someone experiences harassment, they often feel unsafe, ashamed, or powerless. These emotions can accumulate over time, resulting in significant mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Victims may have difficulty sleeping, lose interest in activities they once loved, or feel perpetually anxious. The emotional suffering can be as damaging as physical injuries and can sometimes be even more difficult to overcome.Harassment also has a profound impact on self-esteem. Being targeted repeatedly can lead individuals to question their value or feel as if they don’t belong. This may result in isolation, where victims distance themselves from friends, family, or coworkers. In some instances, they might even hold themselves responsible for what occurred, which only exacerbates the emotional pain. The effects of harassment often linger long after the behavior ceases. Many individuals carry these consequences with them for years. They may start avoiding specific places, struggle to trust others, or experience anxiety in situations that remind them of their harassment. Healing is a gradual process and typically requires support from counselors, loved ones, and safe environments. To effectively address the harm caused by harassment, it is essential that we listen to survivors, believe their experiences, and foster spaces where everyone feels respected and secure. While words can inflict pain, through compassion and action, we can help transform that pain into healing.Written by : Rezina Tuladhar
